Franklin Teacher Participates in International Workshop
Mr. John Parauka was one of only eight teachers chosen from the United States to participate in an economics workshop that traced the effects of the Marshall Plan on post World War II Austria. The participants included teachers from Maryland, California and Virginia. The workshop visited industrial sites in Austria over a ten day period. The sites included a conference center in Salzburg, The Loden-Steiner clothing plant in Mandling, a mega-power plant and dam in Kaprun, the Voest-Alpine Steel Plant near Linz and a presentation at the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The participants also visited the Mauthausen-Gusen Nazi concentration camp in Gusen. They attended a lecture and discussion at the United States Embassy hosted by the new U.S. Ambassador to Austria, William C. Eacho. The trip ended with a farewell talk from the former Austrian Ambassador to the United States Ms. Nowotny. Mr. Parauka will incorporate what he learned in his economics geography unit.
