Green Society Partners with Green Light New Orleans

At the beginning of second semester, Green Society partnered with local non-profit organization, Green Light New Orleans, with a learn and serve grant supported by the Louisiana Serve Commission in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Green Light New Orleans is a local organization that installs energy efficient light bulbs (CFLs) for free in homes in and around New Orleans. With this grant, Green Light New Orleans has been able to set up a service learning program with Green Society that will last the entire semester. Green Light describes service learning as "an educational approach that integrates experiential learning and community service in an academic context."  This program requires a commitment of 40 hours which includes several Saturday CFL installations, three backyard garden building events, presentations from guest speakers and the opportunity to teach elementary students about being environmentally friendly with the SPARK program. So far, the students have installed 1,410 light bulbs, saved homeowners 555,540 kwh as well as $64,860 over the course of the light bulbs lives and reduced the amount of CO2 produced by 630,270 pounds.
