A group of Franklin students chaperoned by Mr. John Parauka recently visited Washington, D. C. as participants in the Close-Up Foundation's civic education program. Students met with their congresspersons and debated current issues with other young people from around the country. A highlight of the trip was meeting with the new congressperson from New Orleans, Rep. Cedric Richmond who is also a Franklin alum. Since Mr. Richmond is the first alum from Franklin who was elected to congress the school presented him with a plaque for his office which is a depiction of the front of the school. Mr. Richmond spent time answering questions from the students and expressed an interest in coming to the school campus to meet with more Franklin students. Rep. Richmond said his time at Franklin, because of the school’s diverse population and excellent curriculum, had a great effect on his perspectives in life . The Franklin group also met with Senator Mary Landrieu and Rep. Steve Scalise at which time each congressperson answered questions about current issues. The students were also able to visit the House of Representatives gallery during the debate concerning repealing the Health Care Bill. The trip also included visits to all the major monuments and museums and a concluding banquet and dance. Student participants made friends from other states that they will continue to maintain contact.
