John Parauka Receives Region I High School
Teacher of the Year Award at Symposium

John Parauka, Franklin’s Social Studies Department Chairperson, was awarded the 2012 Region I High School Teacher of the Year Award on July 22nd in Baton Rouge at the 5th Annual Cecil J. Picard Education in Excellence Symposium and Celebration. This annual event is sponsored by the Baton Rouge based Dream Foundation and State Department of Education. Mr. Parauka, along with teachers from seven other regions around the state were chosen based on a series of written questions, an oral presentation, an evaluation of a video segment from one of his classes, his involvement in the community and the performance of his students. All the recipients received medals, certificates, plaques and monetary awards from the Foundation. Each teacher was given their award by Acting State of Louisiana Superintendent, Ollie. S. Tyler and the President of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, Penny Dastugue. The teachers attended workshops during the symposium on current state education initiatives and national education trends. Mr. Parauka will participate in future state education initiatives as regional alum.
