Students Participate in an Impaired Driving Mock Crash
Fox 8 Story - Students React To Crackdown on Underage Drinking This Carnival Season
Troop B- On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, students from Benjamin Franklin High School participated in a Mock Crash involving impaired driving. The Mock Crash took place at 11:00 a.m.at Benjamin Franklin High School, located at 2001 Leon C. Simon Drive, New Orleans, LA 70122. Students involved acted out a fatal crash scene scenario in front of their peers, allowing the students to see first-hand how drinking and driving affects everyone involved. Parents of the students will also be playing parts in this scenario. The Mock Crash will emphasize the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving, the usage of seat belts and the emotional suffering families endure when a fatal crash occurs in reality.
Numerous state and local agencies provided their expertise to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, Louisiana State Police, New Orleans EMS, and the New Orleans Coroner's Office participated in the scenario. Personnel from each agency were available to answer all of the student's questions at the conclusion of the event.
This education by participating agencies is an effort to reduce the number of underage DWI's, serious injury crashes and fatal crashes. Programs, such as the Mock Crash, teach our youth the importance of making sound decisions throughout the course of their lives.
