Franklin Students Visit Washington, D.C.
A group of Franklin students, chaperoned by Mr. John Parauka, visited Washington, D.C. on a government study visit through the Close-Up Foundation. The students met other young people from around the United States and discussed the important current events facing our country today. Besides visiting the museums and monuments the Franklin students were able to meet and talk with Representative Cedric Richmond, Franklin alum, who represents most of the city of New Orleans in Congress. The students presented Representative Richmond with a Franklin baseball team sweatshirt. Mr. Richmond played baseball for Franklin and helped coach the school team for several years. The students were also able to meet Representative Steve Scalise who represents part of the Lakefront and Uptown sections of New Orleans in Congress. Franklin Alum, Ben Billings, who is an advisor for Senator Mary Landrieu also met with the group and answered questions about wetlands issues important to the state. The highlight of the trip was meeting presidential candidate Ron Paul who talked to the students and answered questions about the major issues of the presidential campaign. Next year Franklin students will be attending the Inauguration.
